Case Study · Maverick Social · Ryder Cup

Rome 2023.

Maverick Social travelled to Rome as part of Ryder Cup Europe's official content team. A five-person crew worked the full tournament week, publishing in real time at an average turnaround of four hours from shoot to post, and delivering more than thirty assets across the week.

The brief was to raise the ambition of the official Ryder Cup feed. We built the week around narrative arcs, recurring characters and the moments worth holding on, so it read as one continuous story.

At the time, Rome was the most-watched Ryder Cup social week on record, and we played a part in it.

01. Creative Strategy

The questions we ask first.

These are the questions we answer with {{partner}} before the creative platform is written. The answers set the messaging, the tone and everything we make afterwards.

Brand Positioning

Where does {{partner}} sit in a category no sponsor owns yet?

Audience

Who does {{partner}} need reached, and in which markets?

Business Objectives

What does {{partner}} need this partnership to return?

Campaign Objectives

What does {{partner}} want to achieve with this campaign specifically?

Key Messaging

What is the overarching message or story we are trying to convey?

On this one we already have the answer: positive impact on young athletes and on the game of golf.

02. Creative Platform

The big ideaeverything isbuilt on.

This is where the strategy becomes one organising idea, and where we set how that idea looks, sounds and behaves everywhere it appears.

Every film, post and activation that follows is built from what we agree here.

For {{partner}} that idea has to hold impact at its centre, so one thought carries the Challenge Cup, the Junior Ryder Cup and everything made around them.

Inspiration

Like DP World’s Smart logistics to a tee, or Mastercard’s Priceless, we would develop one overarching idea that becomes the basis of every piece of content and messaging across the campaign.

The Content

What we make, and why.

Hero Film

The creative platform’s message said in full. The most concentrated version of the idea, and the reference every other asset is cut against.

{{partner}} Challenge Cup Docu-series

Long-form access that follows the {{partner}} Challenge Cup from the first county round all the way to the Junior Ryder Cup itself, and places {{partner}} beside the players whose year it is telling.

On-Site Tournament Content

The week as it happens. Audiences get inside the event, and the partnership is visible at the moment attention is highest.

Post-Event Content

The wrap. What the partnership achieved, evidenced and packaged, so one week keeps working through the year that follows.

03. Hero Film

The hero film drivesthe entire campaign.

The GoalTo carry the key messaging of the creative platform in its most concentrated form. It sets the story, the tone and the look that everything after it is built from.
Built For BroadcastShot, graded and mixed to broadcast specification, so one master runs as a television spot, in-tournament, in cinema and on owned channels without a second version being cut.
The Cutdown SuiteHero cut, sixty, thirty, fifteen, verticals, and market and language variants, all pulled from the same shoot.

04. Documentary Content

The Challenge Cup,documented in full.

A documentary series that follows the {{partner}} Challenge Cup from the first county round to the last putt at Ballyneety, and on into the Junior Ryder Cup itself.

The StoryImpact, told through the players. What five months of competition does to a young player: how they hold their nerve, how they recover, how they work with the people around them, and how they keep raising their own standard.
Who Is In ItThe players first. Around them, the organisers who built the competition and the {{partner}} people who backed it, on camera and on the record about why.
Event Mini DocsShort films off the back of each round as it happens, so the story publishes across the year instead of waiting for the finish, with {{partner}}'s involvement visible at every stage.
Character Insight ShortsOne player, one journey, one film. The pieces that give the hero documentary its cast, and give each county a reason to follow someone of their own.

05. Tournament Content

A studio on the ground, in Limerick.

The event, activated in full, at the pace it moves. We are the production team on the ground for the week, making the content that covers the event itself, the players in it, and what {{partner}}'s partnership puts behind them.

The On-Site StudioA production and editing team based in Limerick for the duration. Everything is shot, cut and published the same day, without anything leaving site to be finished.
Tournament ContentThe players, shot close. Warm-ups, walks between holes, the shot they talk about afterwards, cut and published the same day while the match is still live.
{{partner}} At The EventActivations, installations, hospitality setup and the guest experience, captured as they run and recapped every day.

06. Post-Event

Content deliveredpost-event.

Goals

Post-event content does two things. It shows what the partnership achieved, and it carries momentum into the next edition rather than letting the story stop on the Sunday.

A Final Documentary Episode

The last chapter of the series, made to the same specification. The people who spent a year preparing the course, filmed after the world has been and gone.

Partnership Insights

Interview-led pieces with senior leadership and key stakeholders on both sides, made for internal, client and B2B use.

Partnership Film

A single film covering the week, cut for the widest audience and released while the event is still being talked about.
